Supervised by Katy David, LPC-S
At the core of my counseling approach is a commitment to remain curious. I want to learn what moves you, rather than judge, compare, or pathologize. I am directive (meaning that I am an active participant and guide during our time together), yet client-driven (meaning that our work is rooted in what you want for yourself). I like to laugh a lot, but I take you seriously. I invite you to bring your whole self—mind, body, and spirit—into our sessions, to the level that suits you.
You deserve a counselor who makes you feel safe enough to be brave: to share openly, take risks, face fears, and rise to challenges. It takes motivation to look inward, honesty to build awareness, and courage to make change. Whether this is your first exploration into counseling or you’ve previously engaged in the therapeutic process, you’re perhaps sensing that something’s not quite right: there is a spark—no matter how small—inside you, seeking something bigger, bolder, or brighter than what you’re experiencing in your life now. The effort you’ve invested in noticing that spark—that longing—means you’ve already taken the first step towards making the change you want for yourself.
I believe there is a life force and loving energy at the core of every person, including you. If you’re not feeling particularly connected to that genuine aliveness, don’t be hard on yourself. We all have patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that keep us “stuck” and survival strategies that don’t entirely work for us anymore. I believe that you came to develop these responses honestly in your life and that, at some point in your history, they made sense. In one way or another, the world has broken your heart. Today you have the right and the power within you to choose where you go from here. I will dedicate myself to helping you connect to the well-being that I believe is inherently available to you, and would be honored to participate in that process with and alongside you.
I also appreciate that you, your feelings, and your actions do not exist in isolation: I witness you within the context of your environment, including the influences of family, community, and society at large. As an LGBTQ advocate and cultural competency trainer for many years, I practice counseling with a sensitivity towards the impact of marginalization, oppression, and discrimination, as well as my own personal pledge of cultural humility.
